Environmental Responsibility

The science is clear. What were once suppositions are now irrefutable facts. Human activity has had an enormous negative impact on the Earth to the point that its regenerative capacities are overshot, threatening ecosystems and lives.

Like any other, the sports’ industry we belong to must share responsibility. It is our duty to minimise likely negative impacts and use our incredible potential to reach the masses and bring about positive change that can still make a difference.

Sustainability Commitment

Three international initiatives

World Triathlon has formally committed to three global frameworks that guide our environmental and social responsibility.

Sports for Nature (IUCN)

Delivering transformative action for nature across sport — built on four principles: protect nature, restore ecosystems, reduce supply-chain risks and inspire pro-nature behaviours.

Sports for Climate Action (UNFCCC/IOC)

A sectoral framework aligned to the Paris Agreement: cut carbon emissions by 50% by 2030, reach net-zero by 2050, and raise awareness around climate change.

UN Global Compact

Accepted as a participant on 26 July 2023, embedding the Ten Principles on human & labour rights, the environment and anti-corruption into our strategy and operations.

Environmental Sustainability Strategy

Environmental Sustainability Strategy

The World Triathlon Environmental Sustainability Strategy aligns with our organisational commitments to reduce our climate impact and improve the wellbeing of our triathlon community through nature-positive programs.

We are committed to being a pillar for environmental responsibility across sport — providing policy, governance and resources to support our member federations and sanctioned events on their sustainability journeys, accelerating our sport towards a climate-positive future.

World Triathlon Carbon Report

World Triathlon is committed to ensuring the transparent and credible measurement and monitoring of our environmental impact. We work with One Carbon World to ensure a data-driven approach to carbon emissions measurement and reporting. We are continuing to work on the absolute reduction of our organizational emissions, and on offsetting remaining emissions through accredited carbon offset and removal projects.

A three-step method

One Carbon World is a global resource partner of the UNFCCC supporting the measurement and offsetting of our organizational emissions footprint.

Measure

Measure their greenhouse gas emissions across operations and events.

Reduce

Reduce their emissions as much as possible through their own direct actions.

Contribute

Offset unavoidable emissions and contribute to global climate action programs.
